MUSE/BACKGROUND!

independent portrayal. he/him. 29 years old. Eleventh Harbinger. The abyss took two lives from the Zaitsev family. When Ajax Zaitsev miraculously appeared from the abyss things had changed, but he was welcomed with open arms as a broken boy who had suffered terribly. When he didn't fit everyone's expectations, things changed more. Ajax wasn't a shivering shy boy, in fact he somehow seemed unfazed by all of the worry his family went through. He spoke of his time missing as adventures, telling them in the same manner his father told him stories when he was a young boy. Townsfolk looked at him strangely, but his mother insisted he was the same little Ajax she had held in her arms.It was hard to continue her instance when her little boy was standing over someone twice his size, covered in dirt and blood, with a victorious grin on his face. She nodded as the boy she knew as her son told her that the other kid was picking on him, asking if he was a monster now, saying monsters deserve to be slayed. It was something he rightfully got upset over, she told him, but she spent that night scrubbing what little blood got on to her own hands.Ajax entered the Fatui at his lost father's guidance. The abyss had changed him, a small kind boy was now violent and headstrong. His mother, who used to be his everything, seemed to want nothing to do with him, and all he ever did was cause trouble for the people around him. So when his father came to him and said some soldiers would be by to collect him, he obediently packed a bag and waited. If this was the way he could be of help to the only people he knew, then he'd do it.When he first returned home to visit, with tales about his success and gaining the favor of a Harbinger, no one looked him in the eye. His father quickly put him to busy work, keeping Ajax away from the young kids and their mother. An older sister Vesta simply patted him on the shoulder and told him "She'll come around."But she didn't. His mother got worse. Mentally slipping, constantly terrified another one of her kids would be taken away from her. And seeing Ajax only made it worse. So he stayed away, didn't think about the family that he tried his best to find space in where there was none. He still made sure they were looked after, even if their safety was only useful for manipulation. He was a newly promoted Harbinger when the news reached him. A funeral was the last thing he needed, last thing he wanted, so he didn't go. Instead he put his mind back into work, making sure he was worth the title he was given.Ajax first visited his mother's grave over a year after her death. He was invited home by his sister Vesta, who always managed to stay in contact with him. Being around a family made him uncomfortable, but she was happy and she wanted him around so he gave in. The warm light of her messy house held a comfort he didn't get to feel at the palace."She always missed you.""I missed her. "The exchange felt far too simple for everything else they had left unspoken. But both of them knew that was the only thing that needed to be said. Her grave was simple. Fresh flowers his father laid out regularly, small toys some of his younger siblings left, one he noticed was actually a gift he'd given Truecer. There were no tears. There were no words. He stood there for over an hour, starring at the way her name was carved into the stone. He thought about the few memories he had of her before everything, when she was happy, kind, when he was her son instead of a broken shadow in the corner of her life. He thought of after, the signs they all should've seen. The way she slowly recoiled from him as if looking in his eyes physically caused her pain.Maybe he should have been angry, as he had in the past. But all Ajax felt was pity. To be so disconnected from reality that you can no longer recognize your own flesh and blood. He missed his mother, who he lost in the abyss all those years ago. He felt terrible for this poor woman under his feet, but he had mourned for over a decade, that was behind him now.Ajax still doesn't visit his family often, and when he does it's his sister's home he stays at. Him and his father aren't close, but they show they care in their own ways. Ajax sends money and things for the young kids, made sure his father's business was stable in his brothers hands. His father has made it clear when he passes the family house is Ajax's, and no one disagrees. A silent promise that he will always have a home.Ajax Zaitsev existed in moments and memories. Ones he could never forget. But just as a mother becomes a woman, he became Tartaglia. Things will never be the same.
